"The 411"

So, we've all heard that "knowledge is power." That's really the case when it comes to mental health. A little education goes a long way to understanding what you or someone you know is going through and getting and past any shame to decide to talk to someone.

Real Stories
Some courageous young people have agreed to share their stories to give you a better idea of what it's like to live with a mental illness. Read about their experiences or, share your own story to help put a face on mental illness.

Pop Tops
Want to learn more about the signs of depression, or need some help coping with stress? Maybe you are dealing with a parent's divorce or have a friend that may need help with an alcohol abuse problem. Check out the "pop tops" to learn more about popular mental health topics.

MPOWERYOUTH

ROCK. HIP HOP. COUNTRY. SOUL. POP. PUNK. METAL.

Rock and newer forms of music have been breaking down barriers in our society, moving minds and people, and changing attitudes about important issues like HIV/AIDS, sex education and discrimination.

Music has always been a source of inspiration and motivation. Today, as more and more leading artists step forward to share how they have coped with mental health and substance abuse problems, we can fight the stigma and carry the message to young people all across America that they are not alone and that help is available. Mental health issues affect everyone regardless of age, sex, race or income.

Some of the world's most popular and talented musicians have been lost to suicide, depression and substance abuse.

Every day, growing numbers of young people confront similar struggles in their lives. Sadly, millions still suffer in silence. Stigma, fear and lack of understanding continue to get in the way. More than 2/3 of all young adults with a mental health problem are not getting the help they need, even though help is available and treatment works.

From emerging artists to the most popular headliners around, mpower is organizing musicians to get on the record for mental health.

Some are telling their stories or the stories of their families and friends. Others are sharing the facts about mental health and mental illness with their fans, talking openly about some of the most important issues facing kids today.

Top Ten Ways to Take Care of Your Mental Health

10. Be realistic. If you are taking on more responsibility than you can handle, rank the activities you are involved with and drop the ones that aren't absolutely necessary.

9. Drop the "superman/superwoman" mentality. Nobody is perfect, so don't expect perfection from yourself or others. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

8. Reflect. Take time out to collect your thoughts. Personal reflection in the form of meditation, prayer or other ways can reduce stress.

7. Plan ahead. Feeling unprepared or scrambling to do something in the last minute can be really stressful.

6. Exercise. Regular exercise is a great way to reduce stress, increase self-esteem, boost energy levels, and improve concentration.

5. Healthy lifestyle. Eat a well-balanced diet, and limit your use of caffeine and alcohol. Make sure you are getting enough sleep to feel refreshed and energized.

4. Share your feelings. Talking to a friend or family member about problems in your life can help you organize your thoughts and get support for your feelings.

3. Hobbies. Take a break from stressful situations by doing something you enjoy. Whether it's reading, gardening or cooking, make time to relax and do something you like.

2. Be flexible. Respect other people's opinions and be prepared to compromise. If you are willing to give a little, others may meet you halfway. Not only will you reduce your stress, you may find better solutions to your problems.

1. Take one thing at a time. When people are under stress, an average workload can seem overwhelming. The best way to handle this feeling is to take one task at a time. Pick one project and work on it. Once you finish it, choose the next one. The feeling of accomplishment will encourage you to keep going.

The National Mental Health Association with its 340 affiliates nationwide, has materials on many mental health issues, including the categories that follow.
